On A Pale Horse

Let me start off by saying that I’m not really a Piers Anthony fan. It’s not like I’ve got a seething dislike for his work, it’s just that they’ve never really held my attention. I’ve always thought the Xanth books were written for a younger audience.

That being said, this book was not written like one of the Xanth books. Sure, there’s still a recognizable literary style there, but the themes and subject matter in this book are much more mature.

I’m not going to bore you with retyping the dust jacket or back cover, so if you’re intrigued, click the link

Database Concepts

I’ve started my next class, Database Concepts, today. This is going to be fun because databases are definitely my weak suit. It’s been nice to see a few classmates from my last class. So here’s to an interesting 5 weeks.

More Photo Printing

I went to Staples today to pick up some more photo paper so that I could print up some of the pictures I took this past weekend. I picked up a pack each of the 4″x6″ Canon Photo Paper Pro and the 8.5″x11″ Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy papers. I already knew what the performance of the Photo Paper Pro would be, so that was the safe bet. But, the 8.5″x11″ was a gamble because I wasn’t sure how well the prints would turn out due to the fact that I wasn’t sure how well a 6.3 megapixel JPEG would look when blown up to that size. All I can say is that I’m blown away. I printed this picture and you can see pieces of lint on Reese’s jacket and individual hairs on his face, never mind his head. Wow!

Fiestaware

It’s time for new dishes since the old ones are in Illinois. So I went to Linens ‘n Things tonight to start on a new set. I decided to do something a little different and have now begun a Fiestaware set, but I’m not doing all one color. Over the next few months I’m going to be picking up the rest of the pieces in random colors. I’ve already got 7 different ones now. It certainly is different.

If you’re going to go shopping for this stuff, stay away from the store near 635 and the Galleria in Dallas, their selection was awful. The one on MacArthur and 635 had about 5 times as much. That seemed to be pretty counterintuitive to me, but what ever.

Back Home

Man is it good to be home! The I-35 route is definitely faster, but it’s still 12 or so hours of travel time. There was some kind of front moving through Oklahoma and the wind that came along with it killed my gas mileage and kept me awake at the same time. It’s not fun being blown into the other lane at 75 miles per hour!

It was a good weekend, but too short.

Now it’s time to get some sleep.

El Credito Apprentice

I’m finishing off a large El Credito Apprentice cigar as I type this and have to say that I’m very impressed. I understand that they’re “student” cigars, and this one has had a couple spots where it burned funky, but the draw and flavor are wonderful. Big clouds of smoke!

Children’s Discovery Museum

We took Reese to the Children’s Discovery Museum in Normal, IL today and he had a great time. Admission was $4.00 per person over two years of age, which was an incredibly deal for what we got. The museum is three floors of hands-on activities for kids, with everting from train sets to waterfalls to pneumatic tubes. We had some trouble tearing Reese away from it when it was time to go. I’ll be posting pictures as soon as I download them from the camera.

If you’re in the area, I’d highly recommend taking the little ones there. They also do birthday parties, and there were a couple going on while we were there. Just don’t trust the directions MapQuest gives, they’re wrong.
